## Desk highlights

The notes the desk scored highest this day, in full.

### 07:20 UTC · US discount on Bitcoin hits a 90 day low

Coinbase traders priced $BTC at their deepest discount to the global market in 90 days on Oct 14. The Coinbase premium, the gap between the US price and the global one, closed the day at -0.142%.
That makes 40 days in a row with US buyers paying less than the rest of the world. The day's gap was also wider than the 7 day average of -0.107%.
On a separate reading, quarterly Bitcoin futures traded above spot at an annualized carry of +5.50%, the yearly rate buyers of those contracts paid over the spot price.

### 02:37 UTC · DAI trades below its dollar peg

DAI just traded below its dollar peg on the venues we track. Anyone selling $DAI on those books is getting less than a dollar for each coin.
In a 10 minute snapshot across 3 venues, the lowest price was $0.9883, the highest $0.9974 and the median $0.9945. None of the three was at or above $1.
These are venue level prices from public exchange feeds. They show where DAI is changing hands on those books, not that redemptions have a problem.

### 18:05 UTC · Bitcoin flow tilts hard to one side

Bitcoin's order flow has tilted hard to one side. Our VPIN gauge for $BTC, which measures how much trading volume lands on the buy or the sell side at once, reads 0.1753.
That is higher than 95% of the readings in our records, which puts Bitcoin in the most lopsided tenth of its history with us. No other large coin on our board reached that zone alongside it.
The gauge tracks imbalance only. It does not say whether the heavy side is buying or selling.

### 18:00 UTC · Most altcoins outran Bitcoin over 90 days

Altcoins hold a clear lead over Bitcoin across the last 90 days. The Altcoin Season Index reads 80 on Oct 15, above the 75 line where altseason starts, with 39 of the 49 alts we sample beating $BTC over that window.
The index is 13 points higher than seven days earlier. Bitcoin itself gained 28.8% over the 90 days, so each of those 39 coins cleared a real bar.
The gap between winners and losers is wide. BTW leads with a 32x return over 90 days, with $QNT next at +222.4%. At the bottom, the US token returned -85.7% and $XLM -0.3%.

### 09:00 UTC · US buyers bid under global price for 40 days

Forty days in a row, Coinbase traders have bid Bitcoin below the global price. The Coinbase premium, the gap between the US price and everyone else, reads -0.14% on Oct 15, the 40th day of the streak.
$BTC trades at $81,278, down 2.68% over 24 hours. Bitcoin holds 60.00% of a $2.7T crypto market, and the Fear and Greed index reads 53, neutral.
The sharpest leverage exit came in $ADA, where open futures bets fell 8.0% as price dropped 5.2%, a long squeeze that forced leveraged buyers out. Across 10 tracked majors, 3 added leverage and 1 was squeezing out.

### 08:10 UTC · Two big put blocks led Bitcoin options flow

Two block trades of almost the same size topped Bitcoin's options flow over the past 48 hours. One sold a $200,000 put expiring Mar 26, 2027 for $21.4M in premium, and another bought a $190,000 put on the same date for $20.6M. A put pays if price ends below its strike.
In the last 24 hours, buyers paid $9.1M for calls, which gain if price rises, against $7.4M for puts. Block trades, negotiated off the order book, carried 54% of all premium dollars across 22,303 recorded trades.
The largest call was a $4.5M block buy of the $86,000 strike for Dec 25.

### 06:05 UTC · Ether trading turns unusually one sided

Trading in Ether has piled onto one side of the book to an unusual degree. Our VPIN gauge for $ETH, which measures how much volume lands on the buy or the sell side at once, reads 0.1492.
That is higher than 91% of the readings in our records, putting Ether's flow in its most lopsided tenth.
The gauge reads imbalance, not direction. A high value means one side is trading far more aggressively than the other; it does not say whether that side is buying or selling.

### 05:40 UTC · Bitcoin miners added power over the week

Bitcoin miners added computing power through the week to Oct 14. Our node measured the hashrate, the total computing power securing the network, at 1046 EH/s, a +6.5% change over 7 days and +7.2% over 30 days.
Mining difficulty, the network setting for how hard each block is to find, was 132.72T.
Block space stayed cheap on the day. Transactions cleared at a fee of 1.0 sat/vB, the price paid per unit of block space, and miners took in 512.1 BTC in revenue.

## Desk log

The rest of the day's notes, in order of publication.

### 00:35 UTC · A $5.9M Binance long was forced out

The heaviest single blow on Bitcoin in the 24 hours to Oct 15 landed on a trader betting on a rise. Binance closed out that position for $5.9M, the largest long liquidation of the window.
$BTC finished the period -1.66% at $81,743. Our collectors logged 2,188 recorded prints of $1K or more across the day, each one a leveraged position an exchange shut on its own.
On the chart, the liquidation heatmap behind the candles is an estimate of where leverage sits; the prints on the candles are recorded closures.

### 00:37 UTC · SK Hynix longs lose $1.5M in 30 minutes

SK Hynix just shook out its leveraged buyers. In the last 30 minutes, exchanges force closed $1.5M of $SKHYNIX long positions, bets on a higher price, after the margin behind them ran out.
The short side barely registered. Positions betting on a fall saw $58.9K liquidated over the same window.
The tally is summed from the raw liquidation streams of the major venues, so it counts only what those exchanges reported.

### 01:10 UTC · Bets on higher prices took 83% of liquidations

Bets on higher prices carried the losses on Oct 14. Of $324.5M in forced closures recorded across 11 venues and 987 symbols, $269.3M hit longs, an 83% share, against $55.2M from shorts over 90,409 liquidations.
$ETH led with $65.7M, $53.8M of it from longs, and the single largest closure of the day was also an Ether position on Binance. $BTC followed at $57.2M. Silver contracts saw $16.0M of longs closed against just $28.6K of shorts.
The total came in 9.5% below Oct 13's $358.6M and under the $362.0M seven day average. These figures are a floor from the venues' public streams.

### 02:01 UTC · The desk now dates and keeps every note

The desk now publishes its short observations through the day, about forty of them, each drawn from our own recorded derivatives data. Every note carries its time in UTC and names the board it reads from.
The last 48 hours sit on the desk page. After that, each day stays on its own brief page with a permanent address for every note, in English with Chinese, Russian and Korean translations.
The same notes come as a free JSON API, a dataset and RSS, through the MCP tool get_desk_notes and the stream channel desk, all under the ByKaranteli Data Licence.

### 02:07 UTC · WOO X goes into maintenance

WOO X has just flagged maintenance on its own status endpoint, picked up by our five minute poll of the venue.
Traders with open positions or resting orders on WOO X carry the exposure here. During maintenance the exchange may reject new orders, so changing or closing a position there may not go through.
The incident stays open until the venue's status endpoint reports ok again.

### 02:37 UTC · Ether longs lose $134.7M in half an hour

A $134.7M wave of forced closures just ran through Ether's leveraged buyers. Over the last 30 minutes, the major venues closed $ETH long positions, bets on a higher price, because the margin behind them ran out.
The opposite side barely felt it. Short positions, bets on a fall, saw $3.3M liquidated in the same window.
The count comes from the raw liquidation streams of the major venues, and it puts the pressure of this burst squarely on traders who were long Ether with borrowed money.

### 03:10 UTC · Leveraged silver buyers took the heaviest losses

Silver was where leveraged buyers took the heaviest losses across Binance's TradFi perpetuals on Oct 14. Of $16.02M force closed in silver, $15.99M came from bets on a rise, and the largest single forced closure of the day was a $998K silver position.
Across all names, $101.05M of positions were shut, $94.7M of them longs, a 94% longs / 6% shorts split across 220 contracts and 19,697 events. Chip names came next, with SNDK at $11.39M and SOXL at $10.63M, and gold added $8.93M.
The total ran +63% above Oct 13, when $61.84M was force closed.

### 03:37 UTC · Gate closes BNB withdrawals on BSC

Gate has closed BNB withdrawals on the BSC network. The change appears in the exchange's own currency list, which we read daily.
The exposure sits with $BNB holders on Gate who send funds out over BSC, the BNB Smart Chain. Until the venue reopens that route, coins there can't be moved to a wallet or another exchange that way.
Deposits and other networks may still be open. A withdrawal pause is the earliest public sign a venue gives when something is wrong, though most turn out to be routine maintenance.

### 06:20 UTC · Chainlink longs on Bybit pay 10.95% a year

Chainlink longs on Bybit faced the widest gap between funding and borrowing costs across 15 assets on three venues in the 05:25 UTC read on Oct 15. Their perpetual bets cost 10.95% a year in funding, paid to the short side. Borrowing $LINK on the same venue cost 0.53% a year.
That left a recorded spread of 10.42% a year, the largest in this read.
USDT, the stablecoin most margin traders borrow, had a median rate of 3.91% a year across the three venues. OKX charged the least at 3.5%, and Binance the most at 4.82%.

Dated $BTC futures on Bullish and Bybit reach their end date on Oct 16, the nearest expiries on the calendar. Bybit also closes out dated $ETH, DOGE, Hype and Mantle contracts that day, all of them delivery contracts with a fixed end date.
Over the next 7 days, 102 dated futures expire across 11 venues, with 6,089 option contracts alongside.
The 24 hours to 09:15 UTC on Oct 15 brought one recorded settlement. A Deribit Avalanche contract settled at $9.573 at 08:00 UTC.

### 09:20 UTC · Insurance funds gave up $71.5M in a day

The 10 exchanges we cover held $7.62B in insurance funds on Oct 15, a -0.93% change, or -$71.5M, over 24 hours. That money covers liquidations that close below the bankruptcy price, the point where a trader's margin is gone.
Bybit's fund moved most, -1.78% to $1.15B. OKX, the largest at $2.99B, moved -1.67%. Binance, MEXC and most smaller venues ended slightly higher. Over seven days the total reads -0.74%.
Together the funds equal 16.43% of open perpetual positions on the coins we track. These are balances the venues report, not audits, and a fund that pays out is doing the job it exists for.

### 09:40 UTC · Bids now outweigh asks in the Bitcoin book

Buyers held the heavier side of the $BTC spot book at 09:39 UTC on Oct 15. Within 2% of the $81.2K mid, $190.2M of bids rested against $124.4M of asks across 21 venues, a 20.9% imbalance toward the bid side.
Bid depth in that range was 24.5% larger than 24 hours earlier, and ask depth was 31.3% thinner. Over the same window the mid came down 2.4% from $83.2K.
The largest walls sat right at the price. $37.5M of bids waited at $81.2K, 0.05% below mid, and $37.7M of asks at $81.3K, 0.05% above. Resting orders can be pulled at any time, so this is a snapshot of the book, not a forecast.

### 10:00 UTC · Big money splits with sellers slightly ahead

Sellers kept a slight edge in large orders over the 24 hours to 10:00 UTC on Oct 15, but not enough to call it their day. Across 13,994 big trades they moved $13.22B against $11.75B from buyers.
That leaves buyers with 47.1% of the flow, inside the 45% to 55% range we count as two sided.
Bitcoin took the most whale money at $13.91B across 7,506 trades, and it also carried the largest single order at $34.8M. Ether followed with $9.69B across 5,577 trades.

### 11:00 UTC · Shorts carry more of the modeled risk

On the estimated liquidation map for $BTC on Oct 15, the heavier side within 3% of the $81,000 price is above it. That is where traders betting on a fall would be forced to buy back.
The nearest modeled short liquidations start at $81,827, and the largest cluster sits at $83,813.
Below the price, the nearest modeled long liquidations begin at $80,315, with the largest cluster at $78,897. All of these levels are estimates built from open interest and leverage, not recorded closures.

### 12:00 UTC · Cardano traders cut 50.8% of futures bets

Cardano saw the deepest leverage cut on our board in the 24 hours to Oct 15, 11:35 UTC. Open interest in $ADA, the value of futures bets still open, moved -50.8% with price at -5.75%.
The rest of the list followed the same pattern. XRP moved -39.1% with price at -4.93%, Dogecoin -38.79%, Avalanche -37.56% and Chainlink -30.38%. Open bets in Ether moved -19.57% with $ETH at -5.63%.
Funding stayed flat across all eight coins, between -0.01% and 0.01%, so neither side paid much to keep positions open. Bets came off on the way down, and few new ones replaced them.

No venue doubled up in the 24 hours to 12:30 UTC on Oct 15. Three new perpetual contracts, futures with no expiry date, appeared on three different exchanges, one each, all settled against USDT.
Gate.io went first with JIO at 12:52 UTC on Oct 14. BingX followed with VRAX at 03:52 UTC on Oct 15, and HTX added $WAL at 06:52 UTC the same morning, the most recent listing of the day.

### 12:50 UTC · Bitcoin and Ether trade below Oct 14 range

Both majors trade beneath the prices where they spent most of Oct 14. At 12:44 UTC, ahead of the US open, $BTC was at $80,856.50 and $ETH at $2,355.09. Each sat under the range that held 70% of that session's trading time.
Bitcoin perpetuals spent that time between $81,878.91 and $84,081.75, around a point of control (the most traded price) of $83,395.96. The session closed at $81,641.50, -2.10% from that price.
Ether's range ran from $2,431.98 to $2,523.12 around $2,505.01. It closed at $2,420.80, -3.36% from its most traded price.

Ether traded at $2,349 on Oct 15 at 13:00 UTC, with estimated liquidation levels a few dollars away in each direction. The nearest long levels start at $2,340, and the nearest short levels sit at $2,362.
Within 3% of price, the modeled exposure is two sided. Neither leveraged buyers nor leveraged sellers carry the heavier share. These levels are built from open interest and leverage, not from recorded closures.
Further out, the largest estimated short cluster sits at $2,442, where sellers would be forced to buy back. The largest long cluster sits at $2,282.

Two issuers split the 4 new tokenized stock wrappers recorded on Oct 15 evenly, two each, and the chains split the same way.
Backpack Securities put $AVGO and $TSM on Solana under their own tickers. Binance bStocks issued $MDB as MDBB and UVXY as UVXYB, both on BNB Chain.
Every entry comes from the issuers' own lists rather than a name search, so a token that only borrows a stock's name doesn't make the count.

### 14:00 UTC · Chainlink had the thinnest book of eight

Moving $1.0M at market in $LINK cost an estimated 26.5 bps in slippage on Oct 15, the steepest of the eight order books we track. The same order in $BTC came to about 0.9 bps.
Cardano followed Chainlink at 22.5 bps, then Dogecoin at 14.3 bps and BNB at 10.8 bps. At the deep end, Ether cost 1.7 bps, Solana 4.4 bps and XRP 5.3 bps.
Forced closures in the thin coins have to cross these same books. Each one pushes price further than a forced closure of the same size in Bitcoin or Ether.

The largest walls sat right beside the price. Buyers had $20.9M resting at $79,736, and sellers had $24.4M at $79,975, just under $80,000.
Ether was close to even, with $83.0M of bids against $76.7M of asks, a +3.9% imbalance. Its walls were $12.9M at $2,322 and $12.5M at $2,329.

The move landed on traders betting on a fall. Our streams recorded $10.3M of short positions forced closed in the last 60 minutes, against $465.3K of longs. Those are recorded closures on our own collectors, a floor rather than the whole market.

### 15:20 UTC · Turkey's Bitcoin discount comes from the dollar

Lira buyers paid slightly less for Bitcoin than the rest of the world on Oct 15, and nearly all of that gap sat in the dollar. Tether on Turkish exchanges traded at -10.5 bps against the official USD/TRY rate, and the coin itself added only +0.3 bps.
Together that put the Turkey Premium Index at -0.10%, or -10.2 bps, with a score of 46 / 100, a neutral regime. The 24 hour average came in at -6.8 bps and the 7 day average at -1.9 bps.
Across five eligible exchanges, Bitlo was the dearest at -3.8 bps and BtcTurk the cheapest at -15.2 bps, so every venue priced $BTC under the global level. It is a price gap, not a trade anyone can lock in.

### 16:00 UTC · XRP longs pay least on WhiteBIT, most on ApeX

XRP traders faced the widest split of any coin on what it cost to keep a leveraged long open in the Oct 15 reading at 15:52 UTC. Funding, the fee longs pay shorts, was lowest on WhiteBIT and highest on ApeX, a gap of 0.11% per 8 hours.
That put $XRP at the top of the board with a modeled yearly carry of 103.37% after fees. The model assumes the gap holds all year, so it is not a recorded return.
$BNB came next with a 0.09% gap between XT and Kraken. WIF and LINK each showed 0.08%, from Delta to HTX and from Kraken to DigiFinex.

### 17:30 UTC · Oversold coins outnumber overbought ones

On the 4 hour chart, 100 of the 620 coins we track sit in oversold territory, against just 30 flagged overbought. Selling momentum is the more common reading across the board.
The gauge is RSI, a 0 to 100 score of how hard recent moves have pushed in one direction, read here on 4 hour candles. The average across all 620 coins is 43.72, under the middle of that scale.
This is a snapshot of momentum, not a direction. Oversold means recent selling has been heavy, not that it has ended.
