## Desk highlights

The notes the desk scored highest this day, in full.

### 18:00 UTC · Most altcoins outran Bitcoin over 90 days

$BTC gained 27% over 90 days and still finished behind 40 of the 50 altcoins we track. That puts the Altcoin Season Index at 80 on Oct 22, inside the altseason zone that begins at 75.
The index reads the same as it did seven days earlier. $BTW leads the field with a 26x return over 90 days, and AKE follows at 11x. At the other end, $XLM is the weakest of the group at -1.0%.
A reading under 75 would take the index out of the altseason zone.

### 15:20 UTC · Lira buyers still pay below the world

Tether is the reason Bitcoin still costs lira buyers less than the world. On Oct 22 USDT/TRY traded at -14.5 bps against the official USD/TRY rate, and the crypto leg added only +1.9 bps, leaving the Turkey Premium Index at -0.13% (-12.6 bps), a score of 45 / 100 in the neutral regime.
That makes 12 days in a row below the global price, out of 36 days in our records. The gap was thinner than its 24 hour average of -27.3 bps and its 7 day average of -20.1 bps.
Bitlo was dearest at -5.8 bps and Binance TR cheapest at -14.5 bps, so none of the five exchanges in the index priced above the world. It is a price gap, not a trade anyone can lock in.

### 09:00 UTC · Greed holds as leverage gets squeezed out

Sentiment and positioning disagreed on Oct 22. Fear and Greed read 68, in greed, but five of the 10 majors we track had leveraged positions squeezed out over 24 hours and only two were adding leverage. $BTC fell 1.69% to $81,888.
Cardano saw the biggest move. Open interest, the value of open futures bets, dropped 5.8% with price down 4.3%, and our desk tags it as a long squeeze. $ADA
US demand stayed soft too. Coinbase buyers paid 0.08% less than the global price, the 47th straight day of that discount in our records. Bitcoin dominance read 60.05% with total market value at $2.7T.

### 07:20 UTC · US buyers stay under global price 47 days

Coinbase buyers paid less for $BTC than the rest of the world again on Oct 21. That makes 47 days in a row of a US discount in our records, with the gap closing at -0.082%.
The discount was thinner than its seven day average of -0.124%. The length matters more than the size here: for 47 straight sessions, US buyers have stayed under the global price.
In futures, quarterly contracts priced above spot at a rate worth +5.01% a year, the annualized carry for holding that spread.

### 05:40 UTC · Miners add power as block space stays cheap

Miners earned 518.2 BTC on Oct 21, even though users paid only 1.0 sat/vB to get a transaction into a block. That fee is the price per unit of block space.
The machinery behind the chain grew anyway. Hashrate, the total computing power securing Bitcoin, reached 1112 EH/s by our node's count. That is +6.2% against 7 days earlier and +12.8% against 30 days earlier.
Difficulty, the setting for how hard each block is to find, read 140.58T.

### 08:07 UTC · OKX goes into maintenance

OKX has put itself into maintenance. The exchange reported the status on its own status endpoint, and our 5 minute poll picked it up.
During maintenance, orders on OKX may be rejected. Traders holding positions there may not be able to change or close them on that venue until it reports ok again.
The status applies to the venue as a whole, with no single coin or network named.

### 02:07 UTC · Bitcoin longs lose $18.8M in 30 minutes

Leveraged buyers of Bitcoin just got flushed out. Across the major venues, $18.8M of $BTC long positions were liquidated in the last 30 minutes. Exchanges closed them automatically once the collateral behind them could no longer cover the losses.
The other side barely registered. Only $11.3K of positions betting on a lower price were closed in the same window, so the damage fell almost entirely on traders leaning up.
These totals are counted from the raw liquidation streams of the major venues.

### 17:30 UTC · Solana META buyers pay +9.01% over the stock

Buyers of tokenized Meta on Solana are paying well above the real share. The META token there trades at a +9.01% premium to the underlying Meta stock it tracks.
The premium is the gap between the token's price on chain and the price of the listed share. A plus reading means token holders pay more than stock buyers for the same exposure.
This reading measures that gap, not the direction of $META itself. A wide premium shows where the token is priced against the stock, and it says nothing about where the share trades next.

## Desk log

The rest of the day's notes, in order of publication.

### 00:35 UTC · Bitcoin's rise forced out a $2.0M short

The biggest forced closure on Bitcoin in the 24 hours to Oct 22 landed on a trader betting on a drop, a short liquidation of $2.0M on Binance. That figure is the size of the position closed, not the trader's loss.
$BTC ended the window +1.46% at $84,193. Across the day our collectors logged 1,973 recorded prints of $1K or more.
The liquidation heatmap behind the candles is an estimate of where leveraged positions sit; the prints on the candles are recorded closures.

### 03:10 UTC · Crude shorts forced out on a long heavy day

Crude oil went the other way on Oct 21. Leveraged buyers took most of the $25.76M forced out of Binance's TradFi perpetuals, a 60% longs / 40% shorts split, yet on crude it was short sellers who lost $1.90M of the $2.47M closed. The largest single closure of the day was also crude, a $524K position.
SanDisk led the board at $5.90M, with $4.06M of it long bets. SOXL, SK Hynix and KORU also hit buyers hardest. SPCX came out closer to even, $1.92M of longs against $2.25M of shorts.
The day's total came in 10% below Oct 20's $28.70M, spread across 177 contracts and 6,139 separate closures.

### 06:07 UTC · Gold longs lose $1.7M in 30 minutes

A burst of forced selling just hit gold on crypto derivatives venues. In the last 30 minutes, $1.7M of leveraged $XAU long positions were liquidated, closed automatically once their collateral could no longer cover the losses.
The damage landed almost entirely on one side. Positions betting on a lower gold price lost $3.2K in the same window.
The figures come from the raw liquidation streams of the major venues.

### 06:20 UTC · Binance charges the most to borrow dollars

Binance charged the most to borrow dollars on margin in the Oct 22 read at 05:25 UTC, at 4.89% a year for USDT. OKX charged the least at 3.5%, and Bybit's 3.92% was the median across the three venues we track.
OKX also held the widest gap between what Bitcoin longs pay and what borrowing costs. Traders holding long $BTC perpetuals there paid 10.95% a year in funding to the short side. Borrowing BTC on margin on the same venue cost 0.5% a year.
That 10.45% spread was the widest of the 15 assets we follow. It is a recorded gap between two rates, and both can change from one read to the next.

Board: /borrow · Permalink: /brief/2026-10-22#2026-10-22-0620-borrow-daily

### 08:10 UTC · Biggest options blocks sold Bitcoin calls

$BTC options buyers leaned toward upside over the last 24 hours, but the biggest single deals went the other way. Takers paid $7.9M in premium for calls, which gain if price rises, against $5.9M for puts.
The three largest trades of the past 48 hours were all call sales, each negotiated as a block off the order book. The biggest was $5.2M at the $70,000 strike, followed by $3.2M at $82,000, both expiring Oct 30. Third came $2.5M at $80,000 for Dec 25.
Block deals carried 55% of all premium dollars across 19,437 recorded trades.

### 09:20 UTC · Bybit and OKX funds shrink on the day

Bybit's insurance fund posted the biggest move of the 10 exchanges we track in the 24 hours to Oct 22, at -0.99%. OKX, which holds the largest fund at $3.01B, was close behind at -0.92%, and Gate followed at -0.82%.
Together the funds hold $7.66B, a change of -$40.6M or -0.53% on the day, and +0.49% against a week ago. That pool equals 16.55% of the perpetual futures bets open on the coins we track. OKX's fund covers 61.10% of its own, Binance's 14.39%.
These are balances the venues report, not audits. The money exists to pay for liquidations that close below a trader's bankruptcy price.

### 09:20 UTC · Bybit lines up five futures for Friday expiry

Bybit lines up five dated delivery futures for Friday, Oct 23, one contract each on $BTC, $ETH, DOGE, HYPE and MNT. Bullish closes a single Bitcoin delivery future on the same day, which shares the nearest slot on the calendar.
The last 24 hours brought one settlement. Deribit's USDC margined $AVAX future dated Oct 22 settled at $9.311 at 08:00 UTC.
Across the next 7 days, 103 dated futures reach expiry on 11 venues, alongside 6,261 option contracts.

Board: /settlements · Permalink: /brief/2026-10-22#2026-10-22-0920-settlements-daily

### 09:40 UTC · Ask side depth thinned 53.3% in a day

Sellers thinned out faster than buyers in the $BTC spot book over the day to 09:36 UTC on Oct 22. Resting asks within 2% of mid were 53.3% shallower than 24 hours earlier, and bids were 31% shallower.
That leaves $173.5M of bids against $118.2M of asks across 21 venues around the $81.8K mid, a 19% tilt toward buyers. Price sat 1.9% below the $83.4K of a day earlier.
The biggest walls hug the mid on both sides. $43.3M of bids rest at $81.7K, 0.05% below, and $38.3M of asks at $81.8K, 0.05% above. Resting orders can be pulled at any moment, so this is a snapshot of the book, not a map of where price goes.

### 10:00 UTC · Sellers outweighed buyers in whale flow

Large traders sold more than they bought in the 24 hours to 10:00 UTC on Oct 22. Sellers moved $12.09B against $10.68B from buyers across 12,216 whale sized trades.
That left buyers with 46.9% of the flow. It's a seller tilt, but still above the 45% line where we would call sellers in control, so the day reads as two sided.
Bitcoin carried the most big money at $14.60B, with Ether next at $7.01B and Solana far behind at $524.6M. The single largest order of the day was a $40.0M trade in $BTC.

### 11:00 UTC · Longs carry the heavier modeled risk below

The closest pressure on Bitcoin's estimated liquidation map sat below the price at 11:00 UTC on Oct 22. With $BTC at $81,993, more modeled exposure fell within 3% under the price, where leveraged long positions get forced to sell, than above it.
Below, the nearest modeled long level is $81,517 and the largest long cluster is $81,325, both close to the price. Above, short sellers would first be forced to buy back at $82,474, and the largest modeled short cluster sits further out at $85,058.
A move down to $81,325 reaches the largest estimated pocket of long liquidations on the map.

### 12:00 UTC · Bitcoin leads a broad cut in futures bets

Bitcoin led a broad pullback in futures bets over the 24 hours to Oct 22, 11:35 UTC. Open interest in $BTC, the value of futures positions still open, moved -6.58% as price moved -2.06%. More money left the trade than the price move alone would suggest.
No major on our board added bets. Cardano followed at -5.96% with price at -3.99%, and Chainlink at -5.15%. $ETH shed -3.95%.
Funding read 0% on Bitcoin and -0.02% on $ADA, so holding a position on either side cost almost nothing. Our read tags Bitcoin, Cardano, Chainlink and BNB as deleveraging into a lower price.

### 12:50 UTC · Bitcoin and Ether drop under yesterday's band

Both majors have dropped out of the zone where perpetual traders spent most of Oct 21, ahead of the US open. $BTC trades at $81,696.40, under the low edge of that zone at $83,192.16.
Bitcoin spent 70% of yesterday's trading time between $83,192.16 and $84,893.35. The most traded price, the point of control, was $84,457.68. It closed the session at $84,050.00, still inside that zone.
$ETH spent 70% of its time between $2,440.43 and $2,495.50, around a point of control at $2,455.73. It now trades at $2,401.17, below that zone as well.

### 13:00 UTC · Ether longs carry the nearby liquidation risk

Leveraged buyers in Ether carry most of the estimated liquidation risk near price on Oct 22. As of 13:00 UTC, with $ETH at $2,400, the modeled map leans downside, meaning more long exposure than short exposure within 3% of price.
Below, the modeled long levels start at $2,392, and the largest cluster sits at $2,386. Those are the prices where long positions would be closed out.
Above, the nearest estimated short level is $2,412. The largest one sits further out at $2,490, where short sellers would be forced to buy back.

### 13:10 UTC · Binance bStocks drove most new stock wrappers

Binance bStocks set the pace for tokenized stocks on Oct 22, issuing 4 of the 5 new wrappers recorded that day, every one of them on BNB Chain.
Its new tokens are $BOT as BOTB, $BRKB as BRKBB, $TMF as TMFB and $VST as VSTB. The fifth came from Backpack Securities, which brought $META to Solana under the same META ticker.
The count comes from the issuers' own listing pages, not from a search for matching names, so lookalike tokens are left out.

### 14:00 UTC · Ether's top sell block sits 5.25% above price

Ether's largest sell block sits 5.25% above price, $15.4M of offers near $2,534. Bitcoin's biggest blocks, on both sides, are pinned right against the market.
Across 21 spot venues at 13:58 UTC on Oct 22, $BTC near $81,590 carried $195.9M of bids against $130.8M of asks within 2% of price, an imbalance of 19.9% toward buyers. Its two biggest blocks bracket the price, $34.6M bid at $81,550 and $36.2M offered at $81,631.
$ETH at $2,408 showed $87.9M of bids against $75.2M of asks, a 7.8% lean to buyers, with its top bid of $14.5M resting at $2,404.
Resting orders can be pulled at any time; this is size waiting on the book, not trades.

### 14:00 UTC · Chainlink and Cardano charge most to trade size

Chainlink and Cardano were the two costly books to move size through on Oct 22. At 14:00 UTC, a $1.0M market order in $LINK cost an estimated 22 bps in slippage, and in $ADA 20.2 bps. Slippage is the gap between the quoted price and the average fill.
At the deep end of the eight books we track, the same order in $BTC cost an estimated 0.2 bps and in Ether 0.6 bps. BNB came in at 10.1 bps and Dogecoin at 9.4 bps.
On books this thin, each dollar of forced selling or buying pushes the price further than it would in Bitcoin, whichever side gets caught.

### 15:00 UTC · Longs pile new money into SOXL

New money piled into long bets on SOXL over the 24 hours to 15:00 UTC on Oct 22. Open futures bets on $SOXL grew 46.07%, and funding reads 0.04%, meaning traders betting on a rise pay that fee to those betting on a drop. It leads our pressure board with a score of 79.
Gold shows the same pattern. Open bets on $XAU grew 39.52%, with longs paying 0.02%, and most of the board leans long.
The short side is thinner. $BTW shed 7.62% of its open bets, yet traders betting on a drop still pay 0.1% to stay in.

Board: /pressure · Permalink: /brief/2026-10-22#2026-10-22-1500-pressure-snapshot

### 15:40 UTC · Offers near Ether thinned 42% in a day

Ether fell 4.5% in the 24 hours to 15:35 UTC on Oct 22, and yet the offers stacked near its price got 42% thinner over that day. Bids within 2% of the price grew 13.1% deeper.
Across 21 spot venues that left $93.08M in resting bids against $86.27M in asks within 2%, a 3.8% tilt toward buyers. The biggest bid wall, $14.39M at $2.4K, rests only 0.05% under the price. The biggest ask wall, $15.41M at $2.5K, sits 5.85% above it, outside the 2% zone.
Resting orders can be pulled at any moment, so this is a snapshot of the $ETH book on Oct 22, not a forecast.

### 16:30 UTC · Sellers drive SOPH deepest into oversold

Sellers have pushed SOPH further than any other contract on our Binance board, to a daily RSI of 16.9 on Oct 22. RSI is a 14 day gauge of how lopsided gains and losses have been, and 30 or under counts as oversold.
BLUR follows at 19.9 after a -7.5% day, then APR at 20.1 and -2.1%. Among the ten lowest readings, CT took the steepest day at -20.2%.
Across the 400 crypto perpetuals we track, 70 read oversold and 24 overbought, with the board average at 42.7. At the far end, MAGMA reads 80.7 after a +38.2% day.
