## Definition

DVOL is Deribit's implied volatility index: the market's 30 day forward expectation of how much Bitcoin will move, expressed in annualized percent and derived from the option chain. It is the closest crypto has to the VIX. A rising DVOL means options are getting more expensive because the market expects a wider range, which can happen into either a rally or a selloff, so it measures expected movement rather than direction. Like every volatility index it is most useful as a percentile against its own history rather than as a level. We hold the daily series for BTC and ETH back to 2021-03-24.
