## Definition

On perpetual futures (perps) there is no expiry, so instead of delivery the exchange forces a periodic transfer between the two sides to anchor the contract price to the spot index. Each exchange sets the interval per contract: commonly every 8 hours, with some contracts settling every 4 hours or every hour. A positive rate means longs pay shorts (perp is trading at a premium). Negative means shorts pay longs (perp at discount). An extreme rate describes crowded positioning; on its own it does not say when that positioning unwinds. We track this live on the funding heatmap and combine it with open-interest delta to produce the Pressure Score.
