Front expiry

The nearest option expiry that carries a meaningful share of open interest; the headline figures on our options page read it.

An option chain lists many expiries, and the nearest one is often a daily or weekly contract with little open interest. We call the front expiry the nearest expiry holding at least 5% of the open interest of the largest expiry on the chain. One rule serves the options page headline, its expiry table and the recorded front expiry max pain, so the three never disagree. How to read it: the front expiry is where the next settlement with real size sits, and its max pain and implied move are the quick read of that settlement. It is highlighted in the expiry table on the options page.
