How the math works
- Long: liq_price = entry × (1 − 1 / leverage + maintenance_margin_rate)
- Short: liq_price = entry × (1 + 1 / leverage − maintenance_margin_rate)
Maintenance margin rate (MMR) varies by exchange and notional tier. Typical ranges: 0.4% (Binance BTC low-tier) to 2% (altcoins at high notional). Check your exchange's margin schedule for exact values.
Questions
How is the liquidation price calculated for a long?
For isolated margin, liquidation price = entry x (1 - 1/leverage + maintenance margin rate). Shorts use the mirrored formula with the signs flipped.
Does the calculator support cross margin?
Yes. Cross margin is modeled as an additional wallet-balance cushion added to the isolated formula, which pushes the liquidation price further away from entry.
What maintenance margin rate should I enter?
MMR varies by exchange and notional tier, typically from 0.4% for low-tier BTC on Binance up to about 2% for altcoins at high notional. Check your exchange's margin schedule for exact values.
